The day your child is born is easily one of the most memorable days of your life. Where you were and what time your baby came into the world are details most won’t soon forget. But will you remember the look of relief on your face as your baby was placed on your chest, the way their minutes old wrinkly skin was covered in birthday frosting or the look of wonder your other children had as they met their sibling? By having your birth professionally photographed you won’t have to rely on memory alone, all the details and emotions both big and small will be documented for you and your child.
No matter where or how you choose to give birth, the space you are in is sacred space. As your birth photographer I strive to leave that space as untouched as I can, documenting your love, strength and connection as unintrusively as I can.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I hire a birth photographer, can’t my partner/support person take photos?
Yes, they absolutely can. Ideally though, your birth team should be supporting you, not running to grab the camera to try to get a image or two in between contractions. Allowing a professional photographer to handle this important task will not only free up your partner so they are more available to you, but it will also ensure that their participation is captured on film. The photos from your birth will become a beautiful reminder of one of the most important days of your life.
What if you miss my birth or have an emergency and can't make it?
In the event that an emergency comes up on my end I will have a backup photographer that I will call and have fill in for me. If your labor happens to progress super-fast or I was not called with enough time to arrive, then I will still come to the birthing place for photos, and we will set up a newborn session to compensate.
When can I expect my images?
All of my birth packages include a few sneak-peek images that I process and edit within 24 hours of birth. These images are sized to be web ready so that you can easily and beautifully announce the birth of your baby on social media. The rest of your images will be edited within 2-3 weeks. You’ll receive a link to your private gallery where you’ll be able to view all your images and purchase any additional products if you so choose. You will also receive a USB drive or CD with all of your images around that time, unless you are receiving an album in which case it will all be delivered together.
Will you share my photos on social media, or on the internet?
I will only share images that you are comfortable with me sharing. I will always show you what images I would like to share before doing so.
When should I contact you to book your services?
The earlier the better to ensure my availability for your guess date, as I only take on 1-3 births each month.
I have another question not answered here.
Feel free to contact me with any additional questions you have.
What is birth photography?
Simply put birth photography is documenting and forever preserving the day of your child’s arrival. Just as wedding photos help a bride relive her wedding day, having photos of your child's birth will help you to remember this amazing life changing day, and share these moments with your child for years to come. By hiring a professional birth photographer you can rest assured that you will receive beautiful high quality photos of your journey as you welcome your baby earth side.
Will I meet you before I go into labor?
Once you have decided to invest in photography for your birth we will set up a time to get together and meet. This way you can get to know me a little bit since I will become part of your birth team. You can also tell me what your hopes are for you and your baby’s birth, and you can ask me any questions you have.
How many images will I receive?
There is no set number of images that I give to each family, but in general you can expect to receive around 125-200 images. You will also receive a print release allowing you to print your images and I will also give you a recommendation of a photo lab to use if you choose to print them or make a photo book with your images. All of my birth collections come with a slideshow set to music and two collections include a beautiful 10x10 birth album.
I prefer to have my birthing space very dark, can you still take pictures in the dark?
Many women prefer to have a darker birthing space. My camera is equipped to handle lower light situations. However, I may bounce my flash off the ceiling so I can capture the quick moments of birth. My flash will never be directed near or towards your face and most of clients aren’t aware that it's being used.
There are certain things I do not want photographed, is that OK?
Definitely, it is your birth and you are in charge. During our consultation we will go over exactly what you are and are not comfortable with.
What if I am having a C-section?
Birth is birth, each one unique and just as beautiful as the next. If you wind up needing to have a C-section I may not be able to capture the actual birth of your baby as some Doctors and Hospitals will not allow me into the OR. However I will be there to capture your labor, getting ready to head into the OR and of course after baby is born. If you are having a scheduled C-section discuss my being there with your OB and Anesthesiologist beforehand. Ultimately it is up to them whether or not I am allowed in the OR with you.
